As temperatures drop during periods of extreme cold, many households turn to space heaters for extra warmth. When used improperly, space heaters can pose a serious fire and carbon monoxide risk. Residents in Angleton are encouraged to follow these safety tips.
Space heater safety tips:
• Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including furniture, bedding, curtains, and clothing.
• Place heaters on a flat, stable surface and never on elevated furniture.
• Turn space heaters off before leaving the room or going to sleep.
• Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet; do not use extension cords or power strips.
• Use heaters with automatic shut-off features that activate if the unit tips over or overheats.
• Never use outdoor or fuel-burning heaters inside the home or garage.
• Keep heaters out of reach of children and pets to prevent burns or tip-overs.
• Ensure working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are installed near sleeping areas.
Taking a few extra precautions can reduce the risk of fires, injuries, and carbon monoxide exposure while staying warm. If you smell gas, see smoke, or experience symptoms such as dizziness or headaches, leave the home immediately and call 911.
